91 supra power steering leak

Hi! Have a 91 Supra- auto, turbo. Have a power steering leak which seems to be coming out of the drivers side boot- wonder if it is likely a seal at gearbox or rack needs replacement or rebuild? Hoses seem to not be leaking. Any help is appreciated as I cant tell what is under that boot! thanx, bob

When you say 'driver's side boot', are you talking at the END of the rack, or near the end?

If it's at the end, then there's a blown seal and the rack needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Worse, ith may be an inner tie rod end going bad, which can lead to loss of control. You can jack up that side of the car and move the wheel side to side; if there's a lot of play then chances are the ITE is going bad. If it's the ITE itself, this can be replaced; if it's the adjoining part in the rack then replace the rack.

IIRC, it's the same rack as in a Celica I had, and the hose fittings are near there, too. It may be leaking from the end of the hose and coming out the boot via capillary action; this would be a LOT better!

Have any mechanics you trust? Or perhaps a local friend that can spin a wrench? Try to get it up in the air and have a good look. The ITE is a worst-case and can be dangerous!

This might not help but...

If it turns out to be a bad seal then it was most likely due to never having the fluid changed. That's one item Toyota should have had on the maintenance schedule every 60,000 miles or so.

Thanx for the info - the fluid appears to be coming right out of the rubber boot - so its hard to see where exactly its coming from. The pump makes a lot of noise too, possibly from air in the system. thanx for all the help, bob

If the power steering fluid is coming out of the boot at the end of the rack, the rack is leaking and need replacement. The noise is probably coming from a low fluid level. Keep the fluid level in the reservoir topped off, or you will end up needing a power steering pump as well.
