Checking valve clearances on '99 Tercel

The Tercel has just over 60K miles on it, and so far as I can tell from dealer records, the valve clearances have never been inspected.

The factory manual specifes that "packing" be used when replacing the valve cover, and even gives a part number. What is this "packing"? And what can I use?

it means use a new gasket, get from a dealer.

"Packing" is the loose Japanese translation for compressible "gasket" material.

The diagram in the manual shows four small shaded areas on either side of the camshafts, just outboard of the gears. These are the locations of the "packing".

It then specifies to install the gasket to the valve cover.

Could I just use Permatex FIPG?

What you are describing sounds like the little rubber "half moons" that seal the ends of the camshaft bore. I like replacing these whenever possible. But Permatex semi hardening is fine.

Ah, then I should be able to buy them at the same time as I buy the new valve cover gasket.

The Toyota is a bit different from the Honda I'm used to pulling the valve cover on. We haven't had the Tercel long enough for me to ever have had the valve cover off before.

the shaded areas may be somewhere that you need to apply some flexible sealer, some hylomar or silicone if you can't get the proper jap stuff which is like the stuff that is used as seam sealer for body panels, it goes fairly hard but stays flexible.

I've never used Hondabond. I use Permatex orange sensor-safe Form-A-Gasket. The cam cover on the Integra requires a tiny dab of this stuff on the underside of the outside cam bearing caps when you remove them.

It's also advisable to put a little bit in the sharp corners where the cam bearing cap meets the rest of the cam cover gasket surface.

The Permatex is going to be a lot easier for me to find. OK to use?

No, I never have. I did not mean to give that impression.

"Available at any parts store" may be true in the US. Here in Canada the market is much smaller and some stuff is very hard to find and I sometimes end up ordering directly from the States.

I'll check around.

That's correct. The grey stuff was on the cam bearing caps on my Integra when I removed them some years go.

Thanks.

Tegg, its FIPG or formed in place gasket. Basically RTV. I suspect your clearances will be fine. You will probably not have to make a correction till atleast 120K miles knowing your oil change schedule.

Yeah, thanks. With the 5E's itty-bitty sump capacity, changes are done every month-and-a-half. My neighbors think I'm nuts.

After reading Comboverfish's comments, I visited a local UAP emporium, and discovered that "Ultra" is a Permatex naming convention. They have "Ultra Red", "Ultra Black", "Ultra Copper", "Ultra Chartreuse", etc. (I made up that last one...)

But they did not have "Ultra Gray". I'll check somewhere else tomorrow.

Hey, that looks familiar; I've seen it before. Guess the shop I was in was just out of it.
