Dirty steering wheel

Does anyone have a good home remedy for cleaning a dirty steering wheel? I just noticed a discoloration about the width of my hand at about the 7 o'clock position.

When it got sticky and wouldn't come clean I just got a steering wheel cover. It was actually on my old 84' Lincoln I used to have.

Is it leather? If not, Windex or other glass cleaner works well, but it wreaks havoc on Leather!

I would not use any kind of vinyl protectant on the steering wheel. Simple Green (or other household cleaner) and an old toothbrush will work wonders.

So you just seal in and protect the grime?

It may be dirt, but may also be UV and age degraded plastic material from the wheel itself. I've often used wd40 to clean off the crud.
