Don't make 'em like this anymore

I' ve taken a 24 hour test drive on a corolla and an xb, but I don't see anything worth giving up my 01 camry for. The corolla is smaller yet burns more gas, is louder (road noise) and has less room to haul things in.

The xb is terrible on gas for a 3k pound vehicle. And fuel economy is important to me as I've gotten spoiled by my 4cy. that gets 27 constantly in the city and 35-38 on trips. It has an 18 gal tank as well, so I rarely have to stop on trips. I can go 1200 miles and just stop twice for gas..

The new camrys are just too big to me..The Yaris looks like a cool car. Edmunds says the hatch is 20 inches shorter than the sedan..? That sounds like a big difference....I'm just picturing the Yaris not riding as good as the xb or the corolla. Yet another reason to stay put..

It's funny how you have made the same observations between your 2001 Camry and today's Toyotas as I have made in the past between my current

1997 Camry and my previous 1994 Camry. The 94 was a pleasure to drive in almost every respect except for the handling of which my 97 is superior. The most obvious of all attributes was the quality of workmanship within the cabin between the two vehicles. The 97 is a fine vehicle but it certainly lost something between generations.

We were deciding between the Yaris and the Prius, looking for good MPG at the time. We found the Yaris to be too 'cardboardy' for us and went with the more expensive Prius. Tomes

My wife bought a 2008 Camry Hybrid in December. Great car. Far superior to my 2001 Avalon. Not a ton of storage inside but enuf, and otherwise a nice interior with extremely comfortable leather seats.

I guess I'd know more if I had started buying toyota sooner. In between a bunch of POS american cars, I lucked up and bought a datsun B210 and a Nissan pick up. Those 2 gave me some respite from the TERRORISM that is owning an american piece of crap...

Every American POS I had started going to hell before 60k miles. My camry wasn't even broken in at 60k..

I do remember driving my sister's camry. But it didn't have enough leg room for me. Hers was in the 94 range. The 01 was the first one I tried that I could stretch out enough in. I guess that series goes back to '97.

That's what happens when Detroit paid $62/hr for people to mow grass instead of specifying more reliable parts and better interiors. Now all three are under new management. One even has a three-headed dog guarding the gates. Wait I think Cerberus meant the private equity firm.

That said GM's turnaround has been quite impressive. But it'll be a while before people will trust them again. So it actually costs more to build junk because of lost customers. And it looks like today's Toyota is back to building tin cans again.
