Driver's seat position sensor Corolla 2007

In 2007 Corolla manual stated that part of the SRS front airbag system is driver's seat position sensor. How it actually works(that sensor)? If driver's seat will be too close to steering wheel-driver's airbag will be deactivated or what? Thanks,Andy

It works on the incline position of the drivers seat back. The bag will never be deactivated normally as long as there is a seat occupant. The system will just make an ignition judgment adjustment to deploy the airbag. In addition to deployment other actions will be taken by the system such as stopping the fuel pump and releasing the door locks. The system is continuously monitoring set parameters and making adjustments to the ignition judgment trigger (air bag deployment timing). There are some other actions as well but it becomes rather lengthy for this post. Toyota has designed a good system IMHO but somewhat complex.

I have not studied the specifics, Toyota's web site lists an Advanced Airbag system for the 2007 Corolla. Some modern supplemental restraint systems are multi-stage and will deploy with less force if conditions warrant. I doubt if the seat position sensor disables the driver's air bag. More likely, if the seat is positioned close to the steering wheel, the SRS deploys with less force.
