Fitting a 2007 US Toyota Camry with Metric Speedo

Am considering purchasing a 2007 or 2008 Camry from US and importing to Canada.

for resale purposes I would like to replace the speedo to read KM/H as primary measurement ( in replace of imperial).

Toyota Dealer says it requires a $1900 replacement of the instrument cluster.

I realize that this step is not necessary for importation, however does anyone know what's involved and who would do this work?

I would imagine that the entire cluster is simply taken out, and the new one plugged in, possibly with a soft switch change or two in the ECU. Call a dealership's parts department, and find out what the cost of the new cluster is. I'll bet the cluster costs far more than you expect.

The dealer would do this, as I don't see it being a big profit center for a custom shop. I'll bet it costs ~ $1900.

Instrument clusters are pretty expensive and labor-intensive to replace. The price the dealer quoted sounds about right.

Wait a few years down the road when you are ready to sell it, then find a used cluster from a total or salvage vehicle. It will be far less than $1900, and you can probably find a body shop to do the install. IMHO.

The dealer is as always full of **it.

I know people who have bought US cars and all they needed was a Kilometer decal to overlay the miles one and a French safety sticker about the airbags .( Hyundai )On the sun visor. and had running lights installed . Total cost about $200.00 Canadian.

Plus of course GST, PST and Government approval.

As well Hyundai honors the warranty across North /America

Just as a guess, the Toyota Dealer would likely also replace the odometer to read in kilometres instead of miles and this might involve changes to whatever senses the distance travelled.

I used to have a motor home based on a Ford chassis and the cost to switch to metric measurements in the instrument cluster was sufficiently high that I just said to forget it.

I would go for the decal overlay myself if the choice was mine.

Phone a junk yard and see if they have an instrument panel from a wrecked

2007 Camry. If they do, I bet that the price would be much lower than what the dealership was quoting.

$1900 for that? wow! Cant you trade in the old cluster to them or sell the english units instrumentation to another one. The way I Imagine it, you just have to replace the face such that the KPH is shown. On older Toyota its already available in ebay. search: "speedometer dial" its cheap but you have to DIY.
