Fuel injection cleaners

Hi!

Do you believe in using fuel injection cleaners like STP in order to keep your engine clean? Is this a waste of money, worthwhile, or dangerous for the engine?

Many thanks for your advice!!!

I live in wonderful state of California, strongest or stupidest smog rules in the USA. I have never had a vehicle fail a smog test. I leave controls alone, keep tuned AND I dump a bottle of Techron in the tank about every oil change. Dealer wants several hundred to "clean injectors. I probably spend 20 or so/year. I've never used STP bu t dump a bit of the Techron in my riding mower as it gets crappy if our wondersul California gas is over 30-40 days old

I put the STP cleaner in my (just traded in) '93 Honda Accord around every oil change and never had any problems. Techron is apparently highly recommended, but I don't believe it is sold here in Canada.

Just like the other posters I use a bottle of Techron every few months. If you buy Chevron gas, then you are already getting your Techron.

IMO, using fuel injector cleaners as a preventative measure is a waste of money. Most fuels sold today include additives to keep injectors clean, and so I recommend fuel injector cleaners only if a drivability problem develops or the car has been parked for a long time. Our '97 Avalon is now 10 years old with a little over 110,000 miles and has never had fuel injector cleaner added to the gas tank.

I have seen problems caused by using fuel injector cleaner too often, where the cleaner starts to dissolve soft parts of the fuel system, clogging fuel filters and injectors.

I've seen the most consistent good results in resolving drivability issues with Toyota branded fuel injector cleaner and Chevron Techron. Other fuel injector cleaners may or may not work.

I'll go along with Ray....our 97 Camry now has 135K miles on it, and has never had the injectors cleaned, nor have I ever put Techron in the tank ...and I get Arco gas, which some say is bad news, but I've never had a problem. And the car runs just fine. instant starting, smooth driveability, good mileage. When it starts acting up, I'll throw some Techron in the tank.

I've cleaned one of mine in a small ultrasonic bath (its 120K miles old) and got nothing off it, and it appeared visbly clean beforehand too. I dont think they are worth it. Mind you, i run on Shells V-power which is supposed to be super cleaning super octaney super wonderful stuff lol.
