Help ’91Camry All-Trac/4WD - Transmission

Can anyone offer some advice.

" While trying to perform transmission services, the Trans. had metal shavelings" I was told this by a mechanic, and also that I will need to get get a rebuilt tramission. Currently the car is barely shifting gears, I usually have to restart the engine before I get it going.

I?m not sure how much will this cost (parts and labor) and whether this is worth it to do on a 159K mile car, whose front strot. will need replacement in about a year or so (estimated charge for new strot is $460 parts&labor).

Your advice will be greatly appreciated.

One expensive problem with your prospective transaxle replacement is that it is an AllTrac Camry. There will be more labor involved to remove and replace it since it's wedged in the fram fairly tight. Also, a remanufactured unit may be much more expensive since they are rare.

OTOH, since you have metal shavings in the case, I can tell you from experience that you most likely will not save much money overhauling it once you have tallied all of the new internal "hard parts" that have been damaged from the circulating debris. It may be cheaper to overhaul an AllTrac than to replace with reman just because of the limited availability issue though.

It wouldn't be worth it to me to fix the car at this point, but you need to ask yourself how much you like this car. If you want to keep it, if it's in great shape otherwise, etc. are factors bearing on your decision.

If it's any help, I think having to "usually restart the engine to get it going" is a sign of further non-transmission related problems... maybe its time for a newer car.
