2000? Highest MPG? US? I think your limiting your self to Subarus in that case. There was a 4WD RAV4 and a 4WD CRV in 2000, but the Subaru products (all were AWD) got slightly better fuel economy (although as usual, your results may vary). I have no experience with Subarus, but I might think they are not generally as reliable as Toyotas or Hondas. It seems like about 30% of the calls to Car Talk (the NPR program) are from people who have problems with Subarus. On the other ahnd, the Car Talk guys are constantly recommending them (maybe they are looking to gaurantee a future stream of callers). If I was limiting myself to 2000 models AWD vehicles with good gas mileage sold in the US, then I'd probably go with the RAV4.

I can't remeber the last car I bought that had issues in only 20k miles. I guess the Mustang I owned with the almost invisible oil leak at around 30k is the only one that required a warranty visit. My 09 F150 has around 60k miles and has never been near the dealer since I bought it. Most cars are very reliable these days. The difference in reliability between most brands is down below the noise level. People are sweating the difference between

1.01 and 1.02 complaint of any sort per year and by any sort of complaint I mean dirty floor mats to blown engines - most of the surveys we can see for free aren't very good at illuminating the severity of complaints. My extended family has Fords, Hondas, Mazdas and Toyotas. Except for the various recent Toyota recalls (floor mats, air bags, fuel system) none have required any sort of repairs. And so far my Mother and older sister have ignored the air bag and floor mat recalls. My younger sister took hers in, but they said her's was OK and didn't actually need any change to the fuel system (so I wonder why they send out a notice....).
