Highlander Towing Harness Question

Hi all,

I decided to put a hitch on my 2004 Highlander which has the tow prep package. I went to my Toyota dealership and purchased the wiring harness which has the trailer flat plug on one end, then a grommet about half way up and then a black box with wires attached going in and out and then to a white plug. The white plug has five pins inside it (male). The part number on the package was 00016-48205-15 and also has Reese: 57210. Does anyone know where this white plug goes ??? I assume it's probably in the rear compartment somewhere but I can't find anything in the service manual. The package also came with a mounting bracket, some nut washers, cable ties, and a 20 amp mini fuse. But......no instructions or diagram. :o(

Any help will be greatly appreciated.......THANKS.

If that doesn't work, just google 00016-48205-15 or go to the

My 02 had the prep package also. The wiring harness was included and was packaged under the vehicle. There is (on mine) a plastic box roughly 4-5 inches deep, about 7" wide and maybe 14" long mounted under the chasis to the bottom of the pan holding the spare tire. This box is where the plug in to the system electrical is. The box (or cover as you prefer) has quite a few drainage holes in it. I believe mine had a cap on it (from vehicle) - I plugged in pigtail (harness) and mounted it to the bumper. It is the flat 4 connector type with rubber cover.

I bought the receiver from u-haul, installed just over 125 if I remember for type III

Curious if 04 is different?

Thanks Ray for this link, it's very helpful, but it doesn't mention what to do with the 20A mini fuse ???

Ron,

Maybe the 04 is different. The bottom of my spare tire from under the vehicle has a round plastic disc that if you turn about one inch comes off and exposes most of the spare tire. I'm just assuming that this kit my local Toyota dealership sold me is the correct part.

If there is not fuse holder in the wire harness or in the black box, then save the fuse in case another use comes up.

sounds different Joey,

The spare on mine is inside the vehicle under the cargo deck.

The "box" I am referring to is attached by screws to underside of this about exactly below the gas filler. you have 3 seats?

No Ron, I don't have the third row of seats, only two. The pic/link above shows the underside of mine (spare tire) just the way it appears.

Finally decided to tackle the job today of wiring the hitch. I pulled the left side in the rear on the inside and found the white plug where this wiring kit attached. I connected the white ground wire nearby where some other ground wires were attached. I pulled the grommit in the bottom and the wiring kit's grommit fit in it's place after passing the bottom wiring through this hole. I fastened the wiring harness under the vehicle as shown in the instructions listed in an earlier reply link. I had to put the 20 Amp fuse in the fuse box under the hood which was marked 'towing'. Everything worked like it should. Thanks all who answered my post for your assistance.
