I like this Toyota dealer in NYC

I drove my Camry from Cali to NYC last winter. Today I drove it to this Toyota dealer in NYC for a maintenance service. They checked everything to make sure my car is fine. Changed oil and oil filter for a total $30 and thanked me for my business. They are quick too. Had it done in about one hour.

Holy shit! Am I ripped by Toyota dealers in Cali all these years? All the time I drive my car in for maintenance services, I get a bill of $70 for 5000-mile, about $130 for

15000-mile, about $220 for 30,000-mile.

The only question I have is this dealer uses Mobil motor oil. Aren't Toyota dealers supposed to use Toyota motor oil?

I just love the brand loyalty that many people have for different motor oils. It is just a bit of a paradox to to good engine health considering that proper engine warmup, driving habits (such as limiting short trips in cold weather), and changing oil more often than what manufacturers recommend are together far more important than your favorite brand affiliation. It's kind of like a smoker who exercises to offset the debilitating effects of a habit he can't kick. Synthetics are great oils that lube better than conventional oils at both ends of the temperature spectrum, but because of their thinner viscosity have a greater tendency to leak past the seals that conventional oils won't. Therefore, unless you live in Alaska, Michigan, or the desert Southwest, conventional oils will serve you well. An exception to this might be if you possess a vehicle whose sub-par oil recirculation design allows sludge to collect. Syns are far less likely to degrade in such a fashion, but proper care eliminates this as a factor in all but a few engines and driving conditions.

Untill now, what you say makes sense.

Not anymore. It was true, back in the 70's. Things have changed.
