Does anyone know if the 4E-FE engine as used in some Starlets is a non-interference engine - i.e. the valves don't hit the pistons if the timing belt fails?

General rule of thumb for Toyotas is, SOHC=Interference, DOHC=Non-Interference.
Just replace your timing belt shortly after 65,000-70,000 miles and you don't have to worry!
