is it Mass airflow sensor problem?

Hi, Yesterday while I was driving home, my 2000 Corolla suddenly could NOT be accelerated, I could hear the load noise made from engine when I pressed the gas but the car would not accelerate. If I pressed the gas gently, the car slowly accelerate, but when I stoped at red light, it happened again and again. It took a while to drive home. Is it the problem of MAS? I had MAS replaced around 70K mile and had the similar symptom, now the car has 163K. thx.

You may have some type of fuel contamination. Did this begin after refueling? If it is very cold where you are driving you may have a bit of water in the fuel tank. Try the cheap fix first and buy a couple of bottles of "dry gas" sometimes marketed under numerous names but it all contains alcohol. It will mix with the water, if any, in your fuel system and and allow it to be burned with the gasoline. You might want to change the fuel filter as well. The vehicle may be experiencing fuel starvation under load and the fuel filter would be the first and cheapest point of diagnosis. Good luck.

Yes, I did refill the tank the same day on the way home and the it was coldest day at Langhorne, PA(about ~20 F). I drove about 2~3 miles this morning with outside tempature 33F, my car seems OK but not sure whether the problem will come back or not. I'll try to buy fuel additives later. Still I am nervous about the problem.

Since you mentioned that the engine made a loud noise, I doubt if it is a fuel contamination problem, although an engine that will rev slowly but not quickly can be a sign of fuel starvation.

What is the condition of the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) and when is the last time it was changed?

If the ATF is dark brown or black or has a burnt smell, I recommend that you get it replaced. The symptoms sound like a slipping transmission or transmission in the incorrect gear

IMHO, you might want to buy a bottle of "dry gas" and keep it in the car in case the problem returns. It may return as soon as cold temperatures do. A bottle cost is usually less than a dollar. If the problem returns and it is water, and you pour in the contents into the fuel tank, the car should run normally in a few minutes. It's cheap insurance in the winter. I keep a couple of bottles in my car and truck all the time, just in case. Occasionally, some gas stations tanks are contaminated with water and you can't tell until your car begins running badly.

I have not checked the color of the ATF, but to my surprise, both of my Corolla(2000 & 2001) have ATF exceed high mark on the sticks even though outside temp is ~30F, not sure this is a sign of leaking of engine oil or not. I will check the color of ATF soon.

The ATF level should be checked with the vehicle on level ground, parking b rake applied, transmission in park, engine idling.

Leaking engine oil will not cause a high ATF level.

That suggestion probably came from me ;-)

The bell housing is a hollow bell-shaped shell at the front of the transmission where it connects to the engine. The torque converter sits inside the bell housing. If the engine's rear main seal is leaking, then oil can leak into the transmission bell housing, but it would pool at the bottom of the bell housing will eventually leak out it would not actually mix with the engine oil.
