Just joined you - anyone have a 'Vigo'?

Hello folks, I just stumbled upon this group and it seems an ideal way to ask a question . . . .

I've recently become the owner of a new Hi-Lux Vigo, bought and residing in Thailand. It'll be a few months before I return there and begin acting as chauffeur for my fiancee and her mother, so I'm still in the dark about how they drive / handle.

I was wondering is anyone here has experience of this model?

Are there any issues to be aware of? (Thankfully, it came with a very good warrenty deal, including all servicing and repairs - excuding things I might break - for 3 years. But it would be useful to know of anything to watch out for) It's a 2.5 litre manual transmission "double-cab", if that makes a difference . . . .

Many thanks, and I look forward to enjoying reading the posts here,

Standard smart-ass answer - like a small truck? ;-) If you're used to passenger cars, borrow someone's pickup where you are now to get a taste. Stiffer suspension is the big difference, meaning if you're driving around with the bed totally empty it'll be a bit rough

- so you throw a few hundred pounds of sandbags in the back, the weight will make it ride a whole lot smoother.

If you won't be driving it for "a few months", make sure someone else does. Get the dealer or the lot owner where it's stored to drive around the block a few times every week or two (monthly minimum), until it is fully warmed up. This will keep the battery fully charged and avoid other problems from being left sitting.

And if it's a double-cab pickup, remember to leave a little extra room for the 'cheat' compared to a passenger car - you have a pretty long wheelbase, so you have to take turns a bit wider to allow for the rear wheels coming inside a bit on turns. Forget, and you start clipping curbs with the rear tires, not good on the tire sidewalls.

Thanks Bruce - nice to hit a group where sensible answers are returned!

Yes - although I'm stuck in the (wet and cold) UK, my good lady is making sure that the motor gets a gentle workout weekly. I've just had to face a few hundred miles in an estate car (station wagon, I guess you'd call it), so I've adjusted a bit to the extra length issue . . . .Also, it was a diesel, so I know now that the old horrors that seem to be resolved - nicely responsive and all too easily sneaking up to the 100 mph mark if I didn't pay attention . . . . Ooops - there goes the clean licence!!

Further info will be gladly received -

Hi guys, I have just come here and saw your q re the Vigo. I have just put an order in for a Vigo (importing it, as they are not getting here for another year) and as of yet have not been in one ! I know that sounds crazy but over here in Ireland Double cabs accross the board are fairly bad! The new Vigo, replacment for what we called the Hilux, I hear is much better. Does anyone have any thoughts on what the Vigo is like allowing for the fact that it is a pick up. Any thoughts would be great !

Kev, I don't know if you'd be interested, but I scanned in the Vigo brochure, and can send you the .jpg files if you like. The reply address here goes to a filter account that I check fairly regularly, so drop me a line to let me know where to send them (4 files). They'll be in Thai, but you probably have all the specs already.

I do find myself wondering how the price you paid compares with mine . . . .

Cheers,

Thanks Geoff B, that would be great. email is kjgibb AT @ AT eircom.net As for the cost, well It works out cheaper for me because I dont have to pay the Gov. VAT (21%!) because it is an import. However I get hit for what the Gov call VRT (another stealth tax!) so I am only saving about ?4000. The dif for me is that the Vigo will hold its value better than other similar cars on the market as the Vigo is only due here at the start of 2006, and the Vigo will have all the specs for that price, unlike the others. It also has alot more room in the back compared to the D-Max, Nissan etc. Cars in general are very costly in Ireland, with the standard D-max (D cab) and the like comming in around ?37000 !! So I reckon you prob got a very good deal compared to me (am I right?). Thanks again!
