My 1985 Toyota Tercel wagon w/auto trans, starting problems

On occasion, only after the engine is warmed up, when I turn the engine off, it will not engage the starter any more.

I put it in park, wiggle the key and shifter and try---nothing.

I put it in neutral, wiggle the key and shifter and try---nothing.

One time I turned the headlights off and it started right up; not always the case.

Assuming that you are interested in getting the problem fixed, you may wish to have the contacts in the starter relay checked.

Ray: Isn't this that old TOY problem that can be remedied/checked by having a friend turn the key to the "crank" position while you give the starter a soft whack with a broom handle or a baseball bat.

The smack was often enough to get the open circuit to close and get the car started.

I remember that with my '84 tercel, I think...

Yes.... When I was a factory rep visiting dealerships, whacking a customer's car with a broom handle did not impress customers. Instead, we used multi-meters in order to look a little more professional. One should only use a broom handle, BFH, or swing press if the shop is not visible to customers.

Thanks to both of you.

I'll do that until it can be replaced.
