No real power from engine before 50K miles?

Hi!

i just bought a Camry 2007 and found that it is much slower to accelerate than my 2002 version. I have been told you never get the real power of the engine before 50K miles. Is this true?

Do they have the same size engines? Is the older one a V6 and the newer one an inline 4? According to these sites the 4 cylinder models have comparable ratings but the 6 cylinder 2007 should be much more peppier. Of course the overall weight of the vehicles will affect performance also.

I can't tell you what to check on your car, but I can tell you to put whoever told you that load of crap on the same shelf with the people who aren't really mechanics, but play them on TV.

It is a 4 cyl. the 2002 one was 4 cyl. too. It looks like there is a slight hesitation from the car when i try to accelerate, like if it was taking a delay of half a second before it reacts. The other one was not doing this!

Maybe you are experincing the "fly by wire" delay that some Toyota Customers complain about. Apparently this is normal.

Is Toyota doing anything differently than Nissan, Ford, or GM? I've driven a number of vehicles with fly by wire throttles (Nissan Frontier, Ford Thunderbird, Ford Freestyle, Saturn Vue) and haven't noticed anything disturbing. Sometimes I think there is an almost, but not quite undetectable delay when I floor the T-bird's throttle, but I can't claim that it is a hesitation. Certainly nothing objectionable. I can't really say there is anything different between it and other cars I drive with traditional cable operated throttles, just sometimes I want to think there is. It is probably the transmission that is the source of the perceived delay, but since both are controlled by the same PCM, it is hard to say what is going on. During normal take off and acceleration, I don't see any difference. Only at WOT do I think something different is going on. The Frontier has a similar behavior if you absolutely floor it. Nothing objectionable. And under normal acceleration I'd be hard pressed to tell you any difference between the fly by wire throttle and conventional throttles. The other two fly-by-wire throttles cars I have driven both had CVT transmissions, and they act so weird there is no way I can say the fly-by-wire throttle is a problem. You floor them, the engine speed jumps up and eventually the vehicle speeds goes up as the transmissions adjust.

Maybe its with smaller engines. Certainly every throttle-by-wire car ive driven has ermm driven me nuts, delay literally of half a second if not more. Even on throttle lift-off theyve held the revs high and dropped them slowly (to do with emissions i am told, as transient fuelling is hit and miss and usually poorly controlled). Ive only driven small engined cars though, like 1-2 litre. The lag in the 1.2 Fiat i drove was far in excess of the turbo lag im used to and made worse by the fact that it was *dead* before the engine responded whereas my current car still has some poke until the turbo spools.
