Oh, dear...well I don't feel too foolish...

The 66 Vair with a 3 speed had a better engine, 110 hp, than we had in our

62 (80 hp) And the Powerglide ratios were basically designed to be driven in town. It had two speeds, Drive and Low, which should have been marked Slow and Stop.

Have you ever seen the drive selector lever on the old Powerglides? R N D and L. Running in D much faster than 60 was a hardship on the old girl. I don't think I ever used Low.

Our front passenger side floor rusted out twice.

OUCH! Turning left onto Mo 21 was a bit of a challenge, especially since the speed limit was 55 and you couildn't see anything coming over the hill to the right, so I pushed the Carina pretty hard. That's the stretch I had her up to 65 before I shifted her out of 2nd. Missouri, the land of the 4 way go, observes speed limits mostly in the breech, too.

Psst! First you convert over to the "Late" split master cylinder, I think they were OE on 68 and 69 only - and they only built a few 69's to prove they existed.

Then you remove the residual pressure check from the front outlet of the master cylinder, and swap on spindles rotors and calipers from a

70-something Nova.

Bolts right on. Stops like you dropped an anchor. It's on my long list of things to do if and when my 61 goes back on the road.

LOL! No, Bruce, I meant because of the lack of a floor in the rear! ;)

I gave a 300 lb friend of mine a ride, and told him DON'T put your feet on the floor. He had to ride for 20 miles with one foot on the 'hump' and the other on the door sill!

(It LOOKED like a floor was there, because the carpet was in good condition and there was a rubber mat over the carpet...NOTHING underneath that, however!)

What, you've never heard of that wonder material, Exterior Grade Plywood? Five minutes of trimming with a circular saw, a few sheetmetal screws to hold it in place and some caulk around the edges, and we'll fix you right up... ;-P

(Thank [$deity] I'm a California boy, and we don't have to deal with that crap on a regular basis. The rolling wrecks may do odd things like shed wheels and suspension bits when they die, but they usually don't have the bodyshell break in two like you cracked an egg...)

I was 17 and didn't quite know the ways of the world!

I'll tell you what. My Mom's '86 Camry has been garaged all it's life, and the Mazda I just got came from Georgia. What a PLEASURE it is to work on a car that things aren't all rusted to heck on!
