OT Google Groups

Can you run google groups off of your outlook express? Or is there any web based usenet service that you can run through outlook express?

I too will have to dump usenet from my verizon account on the 24th

I may be wrong, but I don't think so; it'd be a whole lot easier to use if you could, though. Reading & posting through Google Groups is a PITA, IMO.

Switch to a free or minimal cost news server. I pay $12.99/month for Giganews' basic deal; very reliable, posts show up almost instantaneously, & long retention.

Wow Cathy, why pay for the NGs when you don't have to?!

Kev is free, and I'm stingy!

Check out Altopia. I've used them for several years now. See my headers for proof.

is Usenet independent of your ISP, and independent of theWorld Wide Web.

Good service and completion, but rather short retention compared to, say, Usenetserver.com.

Altopia costs $6 per month for non-binary, which is the plan I'm on.

IIRC, Kevin's server doesn't carry binaries? I love the alt.binaries.photos.original ng - serious amateur photographers who post some great pics - from all sorts of locales.

No, I do carry them but retention is limited to a week.

Thanks for popping in w/ this answer. Sometimes my lousy memory surprises me. But I knew there had to be a reason I'd switched to Giganew instead of staying w/your server. Anyway, good to klnow, in case Giganews has a problem, or I decide to dump them to save the subscription price.

A week's usually enough - well, unless one's been on vacation & wants to too what's been posted in the meantime.

Individual.net is fast, reliable, and also good retention. $10 Euros (about $16) a *year*.

I used to use individual.net when they were free - but they were text only at that point. But then switched to my ISP's server when it improved hugely, & individual started charging a nominal fee. Then ISP's news server went downhill again, switched to kevin's server, then to Giganews because he wasn't carrying binaries at that point. I have to say I've been very happy w/Giganews.

Nothing is beyond the Kevinator, I should think!

I use news.motzarella.org for non-binaries. It is free and does not stick any annoying suffixes onto the end of the messages. Reliable too. I am happy with that and happy with the cost.

I then use free.teranews.com for binaries. It was a _one-time_ fee of maybe

5 dollars. That works well too. It does put suffixes on posts, which is why I eschew it for normal posts. Tomes
