OT What's wrong here?

Have you heard about the winner of a Corvette who is suing because the radio station who ran the contest refuses to give her the car? They asked her for her license for tax purposes, and she said she didn't have a license. They asked for her social security number and she said she didn't have one. They asked why not and she said she was an illegal alien. The court has decided to hear her case. I can't believe it but it's true.

Maybe the contest rules require that winners be legally licensed drivers.

For clarity's sake, which part(s) of the above don't you believe?

That's why we need these illegal immigrants; to pick up sweepstakes prizes that Americans don't want!

She's welcome to file a suit, ready access to honest courts are actually one of our country's strengths. I'd be surprised if she gets a judgement. Often, there are licensing and residency requirements. If there aren't any, she's entitled to the car. The SSN could still be required because of tax implications in the transaction. She might even be lying about being illegal simply because she doesn't want to give out her SSN (a short-term and short-sighted strategy that is probably doomed to failure).

If the INS is at all on the ball, this situation should resolve itself pretty quickly.

I can't believe the court is willing to hear her case. At whose expense will this illegal alien be using the federal court system? What nerve she has!

Or perhaps they need the info to report the car as income to the IRS and state

Both. She will have to pay the Sales Tax on the car when she registers it, and she will also have to pay a tax of 1/3 of the price of the car as 'income'. Since she has no Soc Sec #, they can't collect the tax.

The ONLY thing she can do is take the car and go back from whence she came. She will still have to pay a 'winning' tax on the car, again, 1/3 of the price of the car.

My bet is that she is going to sell the car and take the money and run. But she still has to pay the tax.

Unless, of course, the contest was open to Licensed Drivers only. Then the 'win' is void.

The court hearing the case is what I find hard to believe. The woman was disqualified because she didn't have the necessary information. A license proves many things such as age, residency. I feel they were trying to help her by asking for *at least* a social security number. I think in the end she'll learn it would have been better to just forget it. I think she's going to be in a lot of hot water.

Mine only went to Jan 26. Perhaps my old eyes missed it but I don't think so.

An accidental error on my part. I'm sure you did see the article though.

I see an incentive here that could be lost if she gets her way.

I scroll fast and look for what I look for. I'll go slow again.

Anybody could show up at the station and claim they are so and so. How is she going to prove she is who she says she is? The word of another illegal alien? This is bizzare. "OK, folks, we're onto something here. Let's round 'em all up as they come thru the door!"

Well, if she's already made an appearance, and tried to claim the car, and didn't have a license, and the contest was for Licensed Drivers, then I'd say she's duly screwed.

Perhaps INS will grab her at the trial...
