This is what scares me about the trend toward "drive by wire". Software isn't just something that adds a feature, it's part of the "innards" and workings of the drive system.

We're all as safe as houses, right? Software doesn't break.

I'm not about to get dogmatic on your suggestion; but it would surprise me greatly if that were so. Surely the petrol engine ignition+battery side of things will be almost conventional? So wouldn't it rely on time-tested bits? Main difference would be whence it derives the electricity to charge the small battery, I imagine from the big generator. (Merely "reasonable" guesswork.)

Okay, I have now done what one should do in situations like this: took it to my T-pusher (local dealer who will soon be counting my money); who then asked Toyota UK; who quickly reported...

The problem concerns the old Prius version, not that currently on sale. (My own take is that no doubt the '05-UK model has its own interesting quirks; but why don't we save that for another day.)

T-UK's reply rather clashes with MSNBC's account, which stated it was 2004 and early 2005s that were affected. IIRC, the new Prius has been out since before 2004, so this puzzles me. OTOH, in any untruth-telling contest, involving Toyota sources and MSNBC, I am pretty sure I know who would win.

The glitch in the Pruis design is that the auxiliary systems and ignition is powered by a lead-acid battery just like it is in your and my car. If it goes dead, the battery pack, being on a completely seperate circuit is oblivious to it.

Since it's drive-by-wire type technology, a dead battery would lead to all sorts of problems(or possibly, it's that their maintainence-free battery needs to be replaced - duh)
