problem with KE70

have a problem with my corolla, when you start it it starts but as soon as you let the key go it stoppes but if you hold the key half was its fine, could this be the coil not getting the voltage and if so could it be fixed by hoking a relay up 2 the ACC and running power straight 2 the coil Thanks

I'd check the connections to the ignition switch and continuity while the switch is in the on position first.

I've ran across this problem a long time ago...it turned out to be a burned out resistor in (or near) the starter relay. Some cars have a resistor in series with the primary coil winding to slightly reduce the voltage that the coil sees. This resistor is shorted out by a set of contacts in the starter relay during the start cycle to increase the spark strength while starting (this compensates for reduced voltage caused by the heavy load imposed by the starter motor). If this resistor is burned open then exactly the symptoms that you describe will show up. Look around for a heavy 'wire-wound' resistor near the coil, check it for 'open' with a VOM...or go to a dealer and ask to see the circuit on the parts computer. You'll see a resistor in series with the coil primary and the breaker points (that's it).
