Pulling a trailer with a Camry

Has anybody used a Camry (4 cylinder) to pull a U Haul, small boat, or any other kind of small trailer? If so, does the car have enough power to do these things?

thanks, Mark inAusTX

It's not the power it's the weight - if the trailer is heavier than the Camry, the trailer's going to be yanking the car all over the road.

No. I use a Corolla.

Its not about power. Its about brakes and steering. Check your owners manual for details.

Yes, for certain values of the term 'small trailer'. ;-)

(Because one person's "small" is another's "You've got to be kidding, behind that little car that trailer is HUGE!")

Read the Owner's Manual for the official trailer towing ratings, but

1000 to 1500 pounds would be my realistic limits on a compact like a Camry. A Four will get it moving if you let it work through the gears, but you also have to get stopped and that's the big limiting factor - you sometimes have to do it in a hurry.

Standard trailering admonitions apply: Take it slow and easy at all times. If it's an automatic add a transmission fluid cooler. If you can, get a trailer with it's own brakes, that eases the load on the car brakes. Get a good sturdy hitch mounted by a reputable shop - the Highway Patrol gets quite annoyed when the connection comes apart. Carry a spare tire and matching lug wrench for the trailer, they have flats too - and if the car's jack won't work on the trailer get one that will.
