Quick query about motor oil

Hi all, hope somebody can help.

I have sold a 2001 Corolla 1.6 Auto (UK spec) which is still with me while the buyer's cheque clears.

We agreed that I would top up the oil before he collects it as it was well below the minimum mark on the dipstick.

However he took the user manual with him to read up on so I do not have it to refer to.

Can anyone tell me what grade oil and how much the car will need?

Many thanks in advance.

If nobody comes through, contact the place where you expect to buy the oil and ask them (eg, Halfords, who should have a HUGE list of what-car-uses-what). If you are a natural diplomat, I suggest phoning your friendly local Toyota garage then chat to a workshop bod personally (ie, sneaky back-channel technique). Or ask whoever usually has maintained it for you; I infer some third party has done this, as you are asking us. ;-)

The recommended oil viscosity and grade should be indicated on the oil filler cap, probably 5W-30.

my 2001 Corolla in US uses 5w-30.

check the oil filler cap. IT also is likely it won't need more than 1 quart / 1 liter to top it off, 2 at the max if it is extremely low (which makes me wonder why someone would buy a car that is obviously neglected)
