Automakers Lengthen Oil Change Intervals

Most major automakers agree: The adage that you should change your car's oil every 3,000 miles is outdated, and even 5,000 miles may be too often, The Associated Press reported.

Ford Motor Co. became the latest manufacturer to extend its oil life guidelines, making public that it is raising the recommended oil change interval from 5,000 miles to 7,500 miles on its newly redesigned 2007 models and all subsequent redesigned or new models, AP said.

The company, like many other manufacturers, said last week that higher oil quality standards and new engine designs were responsible for the change, which affects vehicles driven under normal conditions. L&MT

My Corvette went 10,000 miles before the engine computer told me to change the oil.

This is devastating news for the oil change industry. :)

So you'd spend fifty grand on a car, then abuse the engine. What a fukin idiot.

Do *YOU* use synthetic oil ? Not doing so is abusing the engine.

I will NEVER use a $ynthetic oil. I don't have any problems getting 300K out of an engine with plain ol' 30w oil from walmart. You just have to change it at the proper interval.

I'll bet you would with a higher performing European engine.

Myself, I don't. Thats why I use regular filters, not enhanced types that clog easier in the overall scheme of things. I just changed my oil the other day on the yota.. I used a regular ole STP filter. I don't use the enhanced filtration units.. Those are bad news if you only change your oil say every 10-12k miles.. They could clog, and then you are in the bypass valve mode, and you will never know it. I am a believer in multi weight oil though. It's a good idea in the cold winter. But...I'm a firm believer that if you do use multi weight oil, it must be changed fairly regularly. The VI's wear out. MK

10000 miles plus on oil that looks clean so you think you don't need an oil change? the only thing this means is the oil is not doing its job of cleaning the engine . if oil is a little dark at 5000 miles it means the oil is doing its job. time to change it. go with 5000 to 6000 miles between changes. you cant go wrong. just like spark plugs oil is better now too. you don't change your spark plugs every 12000 miles like to did in the 60s do you?
