It is overall economy that counts, not just miles per gallon.

That is why hybrids are big losers. Subcompacts are to be avoided as well, even if it used solely for personal transportation. Get hit in one and you are going to face huge hospital bills, even with insurance, not to mention pain and suffering.

Stick to a middle size American-manufactured sedan or station wagon. By middle size, I refer to traditional middle size, about the same size as a

1955 Chevy sedan. They are contemporarily advertised as "large" cars. By no means perfect designs, these kind of vehicles offer the best compromise in initial cost, maintenance, longevity, safety, and fuel economy. Anything smaller or larger will cost more in the long run.
