I hate to be the one that bursts your bubble and allow the outside universe in, but they do care about the price of gas, that's why there are so many bicycles.

Have you stopped to think that they might ride bikes for short distances BECAUSE the price of gas is so high?

I have to admit that I guzzle bottled water on occasion, but my work forces almost 95% of my bottled water drinking. I buy the gallon bottles, then refill them at the water machine (or at home) several times before putting them into the Recycle Can that my trash company give me.

I don't prefer bottled water over tap water, I just need water where there is no tap water, and my poor planning for this eventuality forces me to stop at the store to buy a bottle.

If I could plan that far ahead, I'd not have to buy bottled water at all. I would need several of those cans though. Remember, I get my water by the gallon so I can refill with filtered water from the machine for 30 cents. (I actually found a machine where I can refill for 20 cents.)

I go for weeks, months, without bottled water, so keeping the empty container with me seems like a poor idea. I can buy two or three bottles of water per year, use the bottle for a week or two, and still sleep at night. And, when I'm done the bottle is recycled.

Much of my bottled water drinking happens after a long day on the job site, and I stop at 7-11 before getting on the freeway. I could buy a softdrink in the same bottle that water comes in, but I don't really drink softdrinks. And, they don't make softdrinks in the size that I buy water, and softdrinks cost more for the sizes they do make.

I see little viable need for the 500ml bottles of water for about 99% of the population, in this you and I agree. But there is a profile of bottled water usage that makes perfect sense to me, I suppose it's because it's the profile of me.

I hear Japanese are greenish too but not as much as the Dutch.

The Toyotas they dump into the American market is not what they drive.
