The engine in that beast is in fact a 2T-C 1600. I wonder how well it runs.

There are a lot of aftermarket parts. The valve cover breather pipe has been disconnected. Plus there's some kind of vacuum valve next to the thermostat housing. I don't know what it is, but it's disconnected as well.

I wonder about the clearance for those aftermarket headers. Space was really tight at the sides as I recall, and I had difficulty installing headers on my '75 2T-C.

This talk about mileage has me digging out my old gas books. I have them going back to July 10, 1981.

I recorded then (as I still do now) the odometer at fillup, and the amount of gas the tank took until full. Plus the date and what I paid for the gas.

The car was a 1975 Corolla 2dr sedan with 1600cc 2T-C engine. 4-speed manual transmission up to Aug 1983, 5-speed after that. All gas was leaded regular.

From Jul 10 to Oct 24 1981, the car used 101.68 gallons in 1984.9 miles, for an average of 19.5 mpg. I didn't use the car much, and when I did, it was only driven a few miles at a time. Odometer about 55,000 miles.

From Apr 30 to Jul 3 1983, the car used 125.7 gallons in 3703.6 miles, for an average of 29.46 mpg. At that time I was driving a long distance courier route, so I covered large mileages each day I worked. Odometer about 78,000.

From Jan 20 to Apr 23 1985, the car used 144.83 gallons in 3447.5 miles, for an average of 23.8 mpg. Winter certainly was the primary factor here, plus the fact that I was back to much shorter trip mileages (but still longer than in 1981), I having quit the courier job a year back. Odometer reading about 107,000.

Gas prices back then? In Canadian dollars per US gallon, mid-July, leaded regular:

1981 - $1.32 (One entry shows $1.11 US on a trip to Niagara Falls, NY) 1982 - $1.69 1983 - $1.97 1984 - $2.19 1985 - $1.87 I think the Canadian dollar was worth about 80¢ US at that time. These are snapshot prices from a particular date. The /lowest/ price I have recorded is $0.75 per gallon, in early May 1983. There was some kind of price war for a brief period in early May of that year.
