The US government does some things very well. Name an accident investigation organization that's better than the NHTSA. All around the world, it's considered the best at analyzing aircraft accidents, even those that don't involve US-made planes. And when it comes to infectious disease, our CDC is at the top.
I expected a different outcome of the investigation, but I'm not the rocket scientist that was tasked with looking at the vehicle systems and the data sets. I was convinced, at the time, that there would be an electronic explanation for the problems we were seeing. I said that the floor mat story was a crock of shit...
There are things that government can do well, and generally can do them in a trustworthy and reliable way. There are not many things that government can do well, but this is one of the things they can do.
