rethreading a spark plug valve

Erm theres no valve there, i think you mean the thread into the head. It is really a decent machine shop job or someone with a lot of helicoiling skill. A Helicoil is a little like an insertable thread creation that replaces the material around where the old thread is and provides a new thread. A bit like drilling and tapping a new oversized thread, putting a bolt in there and drilling and tapping that to the original size.

So, it looks like I'm screwed. No pun intended. That's obviously something I have no business doing, so how much do you think this will cost?

If you take the car to a shop for repair, there are 4 possible solutions, from least expensive to most:

1) Attempt to insert the heli-coil without removing the head. The down side to this method is that if swarf gets into the combustion chamber, the head may still have to be removed if they can't suck it out of the spark plug hole. The up side is that if it works, you can get away with an hour or two of labor plus the cost of the heli-coil. 2) Remove the head and insert the heli-coil. The down side to this method is that a heli-coil is a band-aid repair and if you go through the trouble and expense of removing the head, you might as well have it repaired properly. 3) Remove the head and send it to a machine shop to have the stripped out portion filled in, drilled, and re-tapped. This is a permanent repair. 4) Replace the head with a new one. This is the most expensive and most thorough repair.
