Scion tC or Corolla ???

I'm in the market for a new car, and have narrowed it down to these two. What are the pro's & con's of either.

What have you come up with so far as you've driven them?

Well, I am a 2-door coupe guy, so the Scion gets my vote. Basically an upgraded (downgraded?) Celica; 2.4L DOHC engine (I don't know; modern version of the 22RE???), and I'm sure it has a suspension to back it up.

My biggest problem with Toyota is that they don't have any good, fun to drive cars anymore. The tC seems to fill this bill just fine. Unless Toyota gets going with something more than the stoic stuff they've been selling in the US, I'll be looking at the tC.

Or a Mazda 3, or 6.

Or a WRX

I may be getting older, but I still like driving seat-of-the-pants cars!

Do you want a 2 door or 4 door car?

Well the MRS is pretty fun to drive. Toyota does not feel the need to really market fun-to-drive sports cars right now, they are doing pretty well with their economy line. Lexus may take over the Supra production and who knows what else. Scion handles all the 'sporty' types. I would really like to see Toyota get back to producing some high end sports cars with some good designers, please fire the last Celica designer! I think going down the road of econ only will be a gloomy path, leaving them with the likes of Kia.

You're kidding, right? It ain't no sports car but the tC is a bunch better than Corolla. Wonder who'll be paying 18K+ for Corolla XRSs?

Well... it all depends on what you're looking for. Definitely take them both out for a test drive. They are both extremely reliable. The tC is much "cooler", but the Corolla is more roomy. The tC also has several factory accessories available, as well as TRD accessories (a supercharger is an option).

Well, most Toyota 'sports cars' were based on their other lines (see 1971 Celica; a Corona with a different body) but a lot of them had different bits from their more plebian siblings. I own 3 of what I consider real sports cars; the Hachiroku, the Celica GT-S (albeit an older one) and the Supra. These were purpose-built cars with more 'enthusiastic' driving in mind. Of course, there was also the MR-2, which was billed as a 'commuter car' but initially had the 4A-GE for power and then added the 4A-GZE just for good measure. Some commuter car!

But now, there really isn't antything exciting. Their whole line has been pared down; whle they are aiming at their loyal customers (like me) they have gone the path of other MFG's and focused on the SUVs and the bread-and-butter crap. The only cars I would consider from them are the Matrix (I like 4WD and a large hatch area, hate SUVs) the Solara or a Celica, but the latter is no longer destined for US shores (also the only one of the 3 mentioned solely built in Japan. If I'm buying Japanese, I WANT Japanese!!) They also have gotten too soft; I LIKE that buzzy feeling in my ass! After months of driving a Chrysler LHS and a Grand Caravan, I fired up my Celica and drove it around. It was a little scary at first (due to age the suspension needs help; it's a bit buzzier than it really should be!) but after 5 miles the buzziness went away and the old feeling of being 'one' with the car settled in (Get me; Zen and the art of Toyota driving...). Ah, yes, the Goodle Daze!

Sorry, I do get on some times, but I have been meaning to write this dissertation for a few weeks now; Josh just provided the impetus to get to it.

Scion is made in Japan. A big plus. But it from what I hear it wont be for long.

I agree. The only other vehicle with as much "fun" factor for $20K or less was the Mini S. That's a big engine they shoehorned in there. :)

My brother asked himself the same question. He got a tC.
