One of your fellow xBox enthusiasts nearly caused an accident at two
intersections this past Friday.
First he swooped across four lanes (solid white and yellow lines), then
darted in and out of traffic, including up a blind hill, where he nearly had
a head-on with a semi. The yutz ended up right beside me, despite a huge
lead (he was speeding like a maniac)
Aside from cursing his very existence, I remember thinking, 'damn, that
thing handles pretty well.'
Then I cursed *you* for brainwashing me!
LOL
I'm still not getting one of those fugly things.

I'll open things up quite a bit when I'm on a motorcycle, just to see
if I still can handle it. I've noticed that the older I get, the
faster I was . . . .

So far, the only things that have actually threatened my life have
been an appendicitis attack and a car crash. I had the appendix
removed, but I continue to drive. Does that mean I have a death
wish??!!??
No, I have a wish to live life and enjoy it while I can. Motorcycling
makes me feel alive like no other thing I've done (maybe that just
means I haven't tried enough things in my life). It can be risky, but
everything I do is a risk of one sort or another. What I try to do is
manage the risks in my life so that I'm likely to survive to an old
age. If that doesn't happen, well, I've enjoyed the ride anyway.

Re: Motorcyle helmets
That is the opinion one gets from people; that do not ride. The fact is
seven out of ten auto v cycle crashes results in death of the cycle
drive/rider helmet or not. I one runs off the highway at 65 MPH he will
die of blunt force trauma to his head or body, if not wearing a helmet, and
of blunt force trauma to his head or body, if he IS wearing a helmet.
The object for the bike rider is to avoid the accident that can kill him,
but be just a fender bender in a car. I rode for over fifty years up intill
I was seventy, long before and after helmets became mandatory. For anybody
who has ridden with and without a helmet it is obvious the greater ability
to hear and see to avoid an accident is better than a death report that says
died of a 'broke neck' if helmeted, rather than a 'fractured skull' if not
helmeted.
Motorcycle helmets are of little use at speed and are in fact test only to
20 MPH. In Pennsylvania, were to helmet use was made optional sever years
ago, the number of riders killed with or without helmets went up but the
RATE has gone down and that is a fact not an opinion.

Those things traumatized me when I worked Emergency Department. They're
evil.
No, but donorcycles push your chances quite a bit.
You'll never sell me on those things - you're just too vulnerable.
Of course you have the right to do what you'd like, as long as it's legal,
but those things are just too frightening for this girl. But then, so is
skydiving, bungee-jumping, etc...

I wouldn't ever try to sell anyone on motorcycling. If someone is
interested, I'll give them pointers, but it has to be something they
WANT to do; the stakes are too high for the uncommitted.
I recognize my vulnerability every time I ride, which is why I always
ride with ALL my Safety Shit(tm) every time I ride. I DO believe,
however, that my years of motorcycling have made me a better, safer
car driver. I know a lot of folks who've had the same experience when
they started motorcycling.
Unfortunately, some of them are merely fooling themselves (as I could
be too) . . . .

Re: Scion xBox - Hey Don Fearn...
WHEW - at least you understand that. So few seem to get that part.
I think you're probably right. It helps to see things from a different
perspective. I also realize that most fatal motorcycle/car accidents are
caused by the car drivers, but being in the right does you no good when
you're street pizza.

Re: Scion xBox - Hey Don Fearn...
Don, I share your love of motorcycling, and once had a little 350 Honda
twin, but only put 1200 miles on it in five years. I occasionally drove it
to work in LA on the freeway, and even tried lanesplitting a couple of
times, but finally decided I wanted to live to be old...which I have. The
main two things I learned from my motorcycling adventures are that
1. Auto drivers do not...or will not ...see you, so you must drive as if
you're invisible. You can never drive as if the other guy will watch out
for you. He'll either ignore the fact that you're there, or will actively
try to kill you. Either way, you're very much on your own.
2. When a motorist runs into you, he doesn't run into your fender, or door
or trunk, he runs into YOU. And if you don't run into someone, he'll surely
run into you.
The last dead body I saw on the road was a couple of years ago, when a
Harley had run into the back of a Jeep, and the cycle was so unrecognizable,
I didn't even know it was a motorcycle until I read about the accident the
next day. The poor fellow lay on the roadway, uncovered, while the highway
patrol people investigated and took measurements. He did NOT look as if he
were asleep. I think that cured my curiosity about further motorcycles
more than anything else could have.
Re: Scion xBox - Hey Don Fearn...
*curtsey*
I don't think they actively try to kill you very often, I think they just
don't see you. As humans, I think we're more on the lookout for things that
can harm *us*, rather than looking out for others, unfortunately.
Hence the street pizza...
I got over them in Denver, when we had to pick up a body with *shovels* - he
tried to cut off a semi.
Duh.

Re: Scion xBox - Hey Don Fearn...
Good way with words Natalie! You are a poent, and didn't even know it!
I was going to tell of a horrible (non-motorcycle) accident I saw years ago.
To damned gory to talk about even after 40 years.
All of you have a Merry Christmas and be careful on the cycles. There is no
such thing as a minor accident on a bike.
