Screeching Belt Noise

1996 Landcruiser (petrol) that has a screeching (belt?) noise when starting up. The noise subsides after a warm up period e.g. a few minutes. Sometimes if you engage the clutch slightly the noise will seem to ease a bit quicker.

Is it the fan belt, alternator belt (some offered this one) or something else? If its just a belt of some type to be tighted how do I go about doing that.

Any ideas where a good info site is located on the web for 70's Series Landscruiser and maintainance?

I'm in Australia btw.

thanks ange

Screeching belt noises are generally caused by loose or glazed belts. If the belts shave more than 60,000 miles (96,000 Km), then they probably need to be replaced. Replacing accessory drive belts (sometimes called fan belts, V-belts, power steering belts, AC compressor drive belts, alternator belts) is fairly straighforward. Loosen one of the components being driven by the belt, usually the alternator, replace the belt, re-tension the belt so that it deflects less than 1 inch in the middle, and tighten the component that was loosened.

Like Ray said, but if your Landcruiser has only one belt to drive accessories, it is called a serpentine belt. You will be able to tell just by looking in the engine compartment.

To change it, you only have to release the tension on the belt by moving the belt tensioner pulley away from it, usually using a large wrench or breaker bar to do so. While holding the tensioner away, slip the belt off any pulley. Gently release the tensioner and finish removing it and then replace the belt by reversing the procedure. That may stop the screeching.

You may want to check your owners manual and diagrams usually on stickers located in the engine compartment for serpentine belt replacement information. It's usually not too difficult or expensive of a task.

If you are going to do this yourself and you can not find a belt diagram of it's route around the pulleys, then just draw one yourself for reference. Do this before you remove your old belt of course.

Thanks Ray and Ph@Boy. It's not a serpentine belt, I've checked that much. I'll take a look at what you've suggested and give it a go. Thanks very much for you replies. :-) ange
