Sienna door open ---> battery dead...!

Howdy,

I have an '04 Sienna LE AWD.

Last night, for about the fifth time, my son neglected to close his door (power slider) and this morning, my battery was dead because the lights stayed on.

Is there a way (other than ginkgo) that I could be alerted to such problems?

Sincere thanks,

The best way is to make your son buy a new battery.

That should fix the problem!

Leave the key in the ignition.

Hi Scott,

I knew that I could expect such a thoughtful and kind response from you...

All the best,

Do you want the problem to keep occurring or do you want it to stop? Scott's response is right on track if you want your son to grow up being responsible for his actions. Otherwise you will continue to encourage him to do the same things over and over again despite your repeated admonishments. Obviously he has not learned and now your solution is to change your behavior to suit his behavior. It would be one thing if you were both adults but he depends upon you to teach him how to function in society. He will be in for a rude awakening if he expects everyone else to appease him when he gets out on his own. Okay, I'm getting off my soapbox now. Someone else's turn.

Somebody in california introduced a bill in state to make it illegal to spank your kid.

Maybe I should become the UN Ambassador! Let's give it a try here.

Scott, your signature file is formatted improperly. Yours is dashdashspacespaceenter. It should be dashdashspaceenter. You have one too many space characters. This has the effect of preventing newsreaders from stripping your signature when replying to your post. I am sure this was a mistake on your newsreader's part and not anything done purposely by you, that is why I am bringing it to your attention because I know you have no desire to be annoying to others

How old is your son?

Hi again,

I will amplify my question a bit...

If the slider is open and the car is in gear, a warning beeper sounds.

Is it possible, for example, to program the beeper so that it sounds when a door is open, and the ignition is off?

Thanks again,

It would be annoying but theoretically possible. Get one of those backup warning beepers that attach to the backup lights and wire it to the dome light bulb like this

Do not get the kind that is built into the bulb because backup bulbs are different from dome light bulbs. If the dome light is on, the beeper will sound.

Hi Ray,

On my 98 Sienna, the dome light goes off all by itself after some seconds. I would expect (but do not know) that yours is supposed to do this as well. It seems to be a popular feature on cars now, and has saved me countless times. Perhaps this timed cut-off circuit has gone bad in your Sienna and you can fix that? Tomes

He said his kid's leaving the door open. In your Sienna, does the light go off even if the door's open? I mean off via the time, not off because the battery dies. :)

You're welcome, although you may be cursing me when you get tired of hearing the beeping!

Ray,

I too want to thankyou for pointing that device out. I may have some other uses for it.

Whatever you do, be sure NOT to teach your son how to do the right thing. That might involve effort, and a discussion.

Joe, I guess we have found some common ground between us. Maybe there is still some hope for you.
