Steering wheel extension? Yaris?

I just bought a new Yaris but I feel like I have to reach for the stearing wheel. Is it possible for me to buy a new wheel or even have the current one extended out a bit so I dont feel like I have to reach for it?

No test drive before purchase?

With the airbags in modern cars, I don't believe there is anyhting like this avalable.

I used to work at a Toy dealer in 2005, and noticed all the cars seem to make you reach for the wheel. I also have a 2005 Scion tC that is positioned the same way.

It seems to me I remember reading somewhere that the steering wheels were positioned this way to keep them from being TOO comfortable, in an effort to prevent 'hypnosis' from the road...

I did not add this info because I feel it ultimately did not matter. However, I did test drive it before buying. The problem is it was my best bet at getting a car for a good price that would save me fuel wise as well as get me back on track to having okay credit. With that said, if this is impossible then I am willing to tough it out for a while as I pay it down.

Steering wheels are positioned that way to keep the air bag from injuring the driver.

Unfortunately, the OP will not be able to extend the steering wheel.

I talked to a guy earlier on the phone who owns a car maintenance place. He said it can be done but it cost thousands and takes a ton of work and that no one does it because its not worth the effort. Furthermore, he told me to run if anyone said that they could do it. So I guess thats said and done... lol. I guess I am just going to have to get use to it.

Ja, dot too!

Fortunately, I have long legs so I am never bunched up directly behind the wheel. Matter of fact, I always position myself as far back as I can. In most of the cars I have had, this has not been a problem. In the Scion, however...

My right foot is too close to the gas. My left is too far from the clutch. In order to be able to actuate the clutch effectively, I have to move the seat further up than I like. what this does is cause my right foot to be cramped. or mash it all the way to the floor.

Shoulda bought a Honda...

Do you mind me asking how you like the tC? My wife is considering that or a civic...

If you like sitting at a dining room table while you drive, get the tC. If you like leaning back like a Boy Racer, get the Civic V-Tech or Si.

The only thing I don't like about the tC is the seating position. I would have gotten a Civic Coupe if one had been available, but there was a 3-4 month wait for an Si. The Scion was on the lot.

Other than that the thing is GREAT! It is a rocket on rails, looks good, is comfortable (except for the seating position trying to mash your Gas Pedal foot to the floor!), good sound system (I replaced the stock Pioneer speakers with MB Quarts), versatility with the hatch.

Oh, did I mention it's FAST! ;)

And, depending on where you live, I don't believe it's too good a winter car, esp with the 17" 215/45-17 tires. There are 15" wheels on other Toyotas that will fit, put those on with a good 175/70-15 Snow tire and it should be OK.

I have an '89 626 for winter weather.

Thanks for the info... the wife is fairly short so she may like the seating position. We'll give it a good test drive any way. We get rain in the winter but there's a 4WD Suburban and a WRX for the slippery stuff.
