Toyota Camry hybrid issue

I was driving my wife's 2008 Camry hybrid. It was late and I put it on cruise control at 45 mph on an empty surburban street. Interesting thing is that gradually it accelerated to near 55 mph when I decided to turn the cruise control off. The road was pretty much level.. Any downhill was balenced by uphill driving.

Any one else have a problem with the Camry hybrid cruise control?

Also, according to reports, a court in Japan just ruled that the lead designer for the Camry hybrid died from over work at Toyota. The court decision allows his widow to collect some compensation.

The car was trying to tell you that it's not such a hot idea to use cruise control anywhere but on a limited access highway. Anyone who asks why is in line for a Darwin award.

The unexpected acceleration to 55 mph must have been quite a surprise. You know, I've never once used the cruise control on my Camry. Guess I'll have to try it out now to see what happens ;-)

Do you disengage your brain when you engage your cruse control? Hard and fast rules like you propose are for liberals who either don't have any common sense or don't know how to use their brain. Would you say not to use a cruse control on an empty, two lane county road? Say in NW Ohio were the land is flat and you can see for miles? Or how about Oklahoma or Kansas on two lane state highways?

The OP has a problem with his car's cruse control. He needs to take it to the dealer for repair.

No, but you do when you get out of bed in the morning.

Did the car speed up more than once? When you set the cruise control, the speed that the car is traveling when you release the lever, as opposed to when you depress the lever, is the speed that will be entered in the car's cruise control computer memory.

It was set and going at the right speed for quite a while before it gradually accelerated.

There were some dips and sloping parts in the road. Basically at every dip it gained some speed and then acted like that was the new speed in memory and added gas to maintain that speed on the slight hills. Now don't get me wrong..... we are talking very slight hills and valleys in the road such that if you were not using cruise control it would only require a slight pressure on the gas pedal to maintain speed during the slight inclines and removal of pressure on the gas pedal during the slight down slopes... no braking would have been required.

I've driven the car on highways with no cruise control problems. The difference is that that was at speeds around 65 mph. Here I was trying to get the car to maintain 45 mph.

Does your manual say anything about what speed ranges to NOT use cruise control?

It's a problem. Get it fixed under warranty.

See if you duplicate the problem. If so, take the dealer service manager on a ride to demonstrate that. Otherwise you'll just get the typical "no problems found" and a statement for $100 (or whatever your dealer charges to take the keys from you).

It sounds like there is a problem with the car. As johngdole mentioned, if you can duplicate the condition, take it back to the dealer and demonstrate it to the service advisor and/or technician.

There is DEFINITELY something wrong with your cruise control. Take it to the dealer. When you click "set"... REGARDLESS of the conditions around you, assuming you remove your foot from the gas once you click "set"... the car should MAINTAIN the MPH that you were doing when you pressed "set". PERIOD. It may vary by 2-3 mph when you top out a long incline.

Ignore all this rhetoric about reading your manual and not using cruise in certain conditions... none of that makes any difference in how the cruise is supposed to operate.

Maybe. I had a Taurus whose cruise control got really wacky when used in the

40 mph range. Utterly useless. But, you're right. It's always best to not look at the manual.
