Product recall is not new to the auto industry, with almost all manufacturers recalling their products in the past. In January last year too, Toyota had recalled 533,000 Tundra pickup trucks and Sequoia sport utility vehicles because of potential steering problems, which resulted in several accidents. Another Japanese automaker, Honda Motor, had recalled 63,099 vehicles in Japan in September 2007 to fix faulty brakes. The recall affected Civic small cars and Stream minivans, built between August 2005 and January 2007. While in 2004 Suzuki had also recalled 172,093 units of its Sports utility vehicle Grand Vitara as a fuel-pressure could result in fire.

Toyota sold 34,786 units of Innova in the April-December period this fiscal. Swamy said it would take about an hour to repair the faulty part and the company expected to rectify the problem in all the vehicles in a couple of months. He, however, refused to give details on financial implications of the recall, saying it wont be huge.
