this article makes it clear that Toyota's quality is improving but the number of recalls has doubled between 2004 and 2005 and there's evidence of slipping quality control as Toyota strives to produce more cars. On the other hand, a lot of the recalls are for cars more than a few years old showing Toyota is using repair data to discover latent defects.

My personal experience with Toyota solutions for defects (transmission) is excellent, much better than Honda.

Actually, Honda has done quite a bit with their V6 tranny struggles too; they've extended warranties and issued recalls (depending on the tranny). Unlike Ford and Crapsler, who did nothing.

But as has been said before, the number of Toyota recalls may be on the rise, but it only shows that they are committed to fixing the problems. Again, unlike the big 3.

If you consider recalls as a committment to fix problems, clearly GM and Ford are the world leaders.
