Toyota RAV4 OE Oil Filter vs Toyota RAV4 Replacement Oil Filter

I have cut open the OE Toyota filter removed from a new RAV4 and a Toyota
replacement filter for the same engine and posted the pictures at:
http://home.earthlink.net/~cewhite3nc/id12.html

I was surprised by the cheap looking construction of the genuine Toyota
replacement filter (particularly compared to the elaborate OE filter). I
have to assume the OE filter was some sort of speacial "break in" filter.
Either that or the replacement filter is just junk.

I looked at your website and recognize the replacement filters as the
ones I buy for my 97 Camry.  I also get replacement Toyota filters for
my V-6 Sienna from the same place.  I am considering switching to
Purolater after looking at the filter material.

If the oil is changed every 3000 miles do you think that replacement
filter would still be adequate or it doesn't make any difference?

I have to believe Toyota is selling adequate oil filters to protect their
engines. In other markets (like Europe) where Toyota specifies 10,000 mil
oil changes for RAV4 with a 2L gas engine, they list a different P/N for the
replacement filter (90915-YZZC7). It would be interesting to know what the
insides of that filter are like. The next time I change the oil in the RAV4,
I'll cut open the PureOne filter and post those pictures for comparison -
but that will be at least three months from now.

My independent mechanic keeps telling me to quit changing oil at 3K and
to go to 5K. He also says any Fram, Champion, Pennzoil, filter is fine
if I'm changing at 3K. I tend to use NAPA (made by WIX) or regular
Purolator, however.

Also heard the "Car Talk" boys say essentially the same thing about
filters and changing intervals on their radio show one Saturday.

INTERESTING, BUT IF YOU LOOK AT THE FILTERS *YOU* rated well (sorry for
shouting!)they said Made in Japan (Except the Wix) The Rav4 filter you
panned was made in Thailand.

I would specify the Japanese made filters. They can get them in the matter
of 3 days or less!

Re: Toyota RAV4 OE Oil Filter vs Toyota RAV4 Replacement Oil Filter

So how do I get the Japanese made version? And actaully, there are plenty of
well made US filters. The Purolator PureOne filter I bought locally for the
first oil change was made in the US. The Nissan filters I bought for my
Frontier were made in Japan (I assume by Denso, although they don't say so).

Go to your dealer and order it. Tell them you want the same filter as came
on the car.

They can get them...
You have the part number!

Re: Toyota RAV4 OE Oil Filter vs Toyota RAV4 Replacement Oil Filter

So why don't you just use the Purolator Pure One?

Besides, what makes you thing the "Japanese" filters are actually made in
Japan.

BTW, CarQuest filters are made by Wix. It would be interesting to see a
comparison between a Wix branded filter and a CarQuest branded filter.

Re: Toyota RAV4 OE Oil Filter vs Toyota RAV4 Replacement Oil Filter

I noticed that you mentioned having bought the replacement filters over
the internet at a good price. I smell a rip off here--- the Chinese
counterfeit industry makes poor knockoffs of everything else, so why not
oil filters as well?

How reliable was your source for these filters? Are you sure they are
GENUINE Toyota products?

Re: Toyota RAV4 OE Oil Filter vs Toyota RAV4 Replacement Oil Filter

The filters came from a Genuine Toyota Dealer - Champion Toyota in Houston
Texas. The shipping carton also said Genuine Toyota Parts.

Agreed, in the UK one of the major counterfeiting areas is importing
supposedly "Genuine" items that look right including all labels,

their job.

I once saw an 'oil filter' at a Toyota dealer in Wilbraham MA. They had
cut it open to reveal something little better than toilet tissue and a can
that was labeled "Asparagus" in English and Chinese. The can had been cut
down the side, turned inside-out, and then had a thin shell placed around
it.

They had removed the outer shell so the company selling them couldn't be
identified.

On the subject of filters, what ever happened to Lee? I used to use them
ALL the time, and got cars well on their way to 200,000 miles with them!

Re: Toyota RAV4 OE Oil Filter vs Toyota RAV4 Replacement Oil Filter

I found I could buy the correct Japanese made oil filter (P/N 90915-10004)
from http://www.mcgeorgeparts.com/  for a decent (but not great price). I
still wonder about Toyota dealers pedaling the clearly inferior P/N Toyota
90915-YZZF1 Oil Filter as the correct repalcement filter. Is it really good
enough? I assume it meets warranty requirments. If anyone wants to buy 9 of
the 90915-YZZF1 for $20 plus shipping, let me know.

I'm in the UK, the Toyota filters I buy for my Celica from my dealer
used to be made in France (by Purflux), now they are made in Thailand.

I'd stay away from the filters made in Thailand. Too cheap a
construction. Use Purolator Pure One.
