Toyota tacoma power steering pump

I am looking at purchasing a 1997 toyota tacoma. I am going to look at it tommorrow. the guy says theonly problem with it is that a hose broke on the power steering system. can i check the pump while it is still on the truck?

Also does anyone had any difficulty with these trucks? i seem to only find flawless reviews but something must go wrong with them

Thanks for any advice.

Whether you can check the pump while it is still on the truck depends on how "broke" the hose is. If the hose is burst or disconnected, there is no easy way to check the pump without pressure gauges. If the hose is just leaking, you may be able to see if the pump is working by checking steering effort.

Tacomas are generally very reliable trucks; the biggest complaints that I can recall are wind noise due to the antenna design.

Things go wrong with all vehicles. They all eventually need certain parts replaced.

Unless you are a mechanic, the smartest thing you can do is take the truck to a dependable mechanic for an inspection. Mine charges $50 for this, and it's definitely worthwhile. You should also go to

and pay the money for one of their reports. You'll need the vehicle identification number for this.
