trip advice with a 162,000 avalon

Would you be reluctant to take a 1999 Avalon with 162,000 miles on a family trip to South Dakota? Tweleve hours one direction, and back. Concerned about the "high" miles.

The car is in good shape. Bought it from my wife's aunt at 100,000 miles. She had been takin it to the dealer religiously, and I changed the oil every three thousand. Only work it needed was the oxygen sensors and most recently I replaced the relays within the starter. So, it's been running good. But I would think that this would be the time when mechanism would start to fail.

My other option is a Buick I bought my mom recently. This one has

60,000 miles on it, a 2001. While this car has much lower milage, I don't know it very well and for some reason am actually more learty with this one.

Depends on the car, but in general, nope. No concerns at all.

However, have you looked at renting a car for the trip?

Thanks.

Haven't take a trip this far since I was a small child.

Hadn't considered renting. I'll have to check the rates; I could see if I get a better mileage car where I could actually come out close to even.

No real way to answer the question accurately without knowing details about scheduled normal maintenance done on the car. Which "big things" have been done to the car? For instance, what about timing belt & water pump?

I'd take which ever has the best cruise control, cup holders and air conditioner and maybe the tires. The battery and timing belt and air conditioner this time of year would be my main concern, check the AC belt for sure. Take a good cell phone with you , and join AAA if you can't change a flat.... Enjoy your trip, text us if you have any trouble.

When you took both cars to the mechanic to have them completely checked over, what did he or she say?

As JoeSpareBedroom mentioned, the maintenance and repair history should be considered when deciding which car to take. If all of the recommended maintenance and inspection items have been preformed on the Avalon (including timing belt replacement, tire condition checked, etc.) then it should be fine for the trip.

The same is true for the Buick. All things being equal, take the car that is most comfortable or gets the best gas mileage, depending on your preferences.
