VSV On Charcoal Canister On 01 Camry

01 Camry is displaying check engine. Code read was P0446 evaporative Emission Control System Vent Control Malfunction. Tech at the dealership says 90% of the time it is a problem with a VSV.

Pulled the VSV from the air filter housing. Ohm reading is what Haynes says it should be and blowing in one end results in air coming from the other. Apply 12vdc and valve clicks. With voltage applied the valve does not pass air.

Pulled the VSV from the charcoal canister which was located behind the fuel tank. Ohm reading is what Haynes says it should be and blowing in one end results in air coming from the other. Apply 12vdc and the valve doesn't make a sound. With voltage applied the valve still passes air.

Have I found the problem? Can this VSV be purchased alone or does it come with the charcoal canister only? If not should I take a chance on one from the junkyard or spend $250.00 for new canister/vsv at the dealership?

Any help would be appreciated.

Check your gas cap as this gives the same error code if not tight. Turn until it clicks.

Do not overfill your gas tank by topping up with a little extra gas when the pump cuts out.

Gas cap gives several codes, not just P0446. Thanks anyhow.

It sounds like you have found the problem. If the VSV at the charcoal canister has 3 vacuum ports, with 12 volts applied, air should pass from the port closest to the valve to the one right next to it, further away from the valve and not pass to the opposite end of the valve.

You should be able to purchase the VSV alone at a Toyota dealer.
