02 Camry LE V6 - Sound System Too Bassy?

Hi,

Is it just me or does the 2002 Camry LE V6 with the NON-JBL system have speakers that are too muddy/bassy or is this just the factory deck? Has anyone replaced the stock deck and used the existing speakers and noted any sound differences?

Thanks

My wife's new 04 Corolla came with the least expensive radio with the 4 speakers. There is way too much bass even with it turned all the way down. I think the bass is coming from the radio. I was a radio station engineer for

25 years and the way I'm guessing that is I tapped the rear of the cone in the trunk and the sound it made was not deep enough to put out that much bass on its own. Also the deflection of the cone when you push on it is minimal.

Here's what I did to fix it. Take a couple of chunks of moderate density foam (not Styrofoam - has to be pliable type) and cut them into cubes and very carefully push them between the cone and the frame holding it. Be sure to start with the bass on the radio down all the way. You will need to experiment with this arrangement to find the right density foam, size of the chunks, etc. I also found that I had to keep at it until I had what I wanted so I could raise the volume to the max I want without the speaker buzzing. Don't forget to check AM as this is where I had the most trouble.

Let me know how this works out.

Thanks for the tip. This would be a very cost effective solution if this works out. I find the factory deck to be pretty decent and pull in radio stations clearly (testament to the built in window antenna).

I take it the styrofoam would absorb the low frequency sounds and limit c> My wife's new 04 Corolla came with the least expensive radio with the

Actually the foam raises the resonance of the cone which in effect makes the speaker seem like a smaller speaker. And do NOT use Styrofoam. What you want is the type of foam that, say, you would find inside a packing box that a laptop would come in to cushion the inner carton. The type you can roll/fold up.

So you aren't using the foam to absorb the sound. That's why the small chunks of foam between the metal supports and the cone. You should only need one piece of foam per speaker. That's what I determined after a few hours of experimentation on my speakers. Your setup may end up being different if only due to how much bass you want to eliminate verses the point that you start getting the speakers to buzz due to the elimination of some of the cone excursion. Be very careful not to push the cone up. The foam should be snug for starters.

Just to make one more variable, the size of the trunk will matter because my wife's car (a Corolla) has a smaller trunk than yours. Of course you will have to close the trunk and doors when you get in to check how well you're doing.
