Just found the thread regarding oil changes on the 99. Seems like a spirited debate! By the way, my wife and I love the car.
I would switch to Mobil 1 and go 5-6K between changes. Or at the very least use a synthetic blend and go 4K.
Synthetics are excellent. But I go for a more frequent interval with dino oil, whatever is on sale at 60-90 cents a quart (Chevron, Shell, Valvoline, Quaker, or Havoline I used them all). Cam lobes look prestine while changing timing belt/valve cover gasket, shiny and not a hint of scuff marks. IMO the quality of oil filter is more important than the brand of today's high quality dino oil. I use Purolator PureOne

A good synthetic oil is so far superior to even the best dino oil, there's no comparaison. I use Valvoline synthetic and go 10,000 kms between oil changes. I could go even more. My 98 Camry with 215,000 kms runs very well. LOL Mobil 1 is also an excellent product. Using a good oil filter is also important IMHO
========== Full synthetic like Mobil 1 - 5K Conventional - 3K is optimum Actually 5k with conventional oil is probably OK too unless you're driving lots of short trips in cold weather. And Mobil 1 says you can go the manufacturer's maximum, which used to be 7,500 miles. My simple method, is to check the oil level and condition weekly with the engine cold. You should see a dark color near the bottom. If you don't see a lighter color near the top, just change the oil regardless of mileage. Never hurts to change the oil a couple of times more frequently on a newly acquired vehicle. Also check other fluids like power steering, transmission and brake to see if they're old and dark, or clean and fresh.
Helpful. Thanks very much.
