$145 to fix my sticky gas pedal ??

I read on this newsgroup a few days ago about a fellow Camry owner with the sticky gas pedal problem and the kind response to his/her inquiry. I have the same problem and went back to search the archives and came up with lots of good advices. However being so mechanically challenged, I don't know how to remove the air intake to get to and clean the throttle :(

I called a local dealer in San Diego with a supposedly reliable and honest service dept and the advisor insisted that I have my fuel injection system cleaned in order to clear the sticky throttle problem. The price: $145 as the "cleaning chemical" itself costs them $40.

Having just been laid off from work two weeks ago, I don't have lots of discretionary cash laying around to spare. Could somebody tell me if I am about to be taken for a ride by my dealer? And if you could provide a more detailed step by step guide or an alternative method so I can clean and fix the problem myself, I would greatly appreciate it.

Please remove the "NOSPAM" letter from my e-mail address if you wish to respond to me via private e-mail.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP.

If the engine is running good I would not have the injection system cleaned. You can take the rubber hose from the air filter, off of the throttle body and use a paper towel to wipe around the throttle plate with it opened. I would not spray anything on the plate unless you make sure it will not hurt the throttle body. Some bodies can be harmed by some cleaners. The last one I cleaned was done with the paper towel and then worked fine.

A small brass brush and $5 bottle of throttle body cleaner is all you need... That injector service costs about $75 here...you probably dont need it...

I would first try running some injector cleaner in the gas tank. I had sticky gas pedal and this fixed it.

I'm going to suggest an old toothbrush instead of the brass brush as I believe the brass brush may scratch up the aluminum throttle body. I would do this... With vehicle off and cool Get an old toothbrush Get a spray can of carb cleaner at KMart or some such Take off the air horn so you can see down the throttle body Open the throttle with one hand so the throttle plates are vertical Spray well Brush both sides of the throttle plates and the bore of the throttle body Repeat, repeat, repeat until it is completely clean Reassemble and restart car May idle oddly until computer "relearns" new throttle position If that is the case you might try disconnecting the battery and touching the two cable ends together to reset the computer Don't know if that works for the Camry but it does for Caddys and it can't hurt anything HTH

I have clean several "sticky" throttle problems by using a can of carburetor cleaner spray ($1.39 @ Western Auto) and some paper towels to clean up the residue after the spraying. It is best to take the air cleaner hose off where it enters the throttle body (the hose is about 4" in diameter and held on by a hose clamp) and spray the carburetor cleaner in. It will be very obvious where the dirt is. Open the butterfly by hand and clean it and the throttle body where the butterfly closes off. The whole procedure takes

1`5-20 minutes and your car will run great. Note: It may smoke a little until the carb cleaner is cleared out of the system. The is probably one of the easiest car repair procedures you can undertake and, when you are successful, it is a great confidence builder.
