1990 Camry alternator

Gotta love my Camry. Started to go to work Tuesday at 5:30 am. As soon as I got out on the highway, lights on dash came on--suspected alternator. Managed to make it home. Took other car to work. Came home, yanked alt, took it to local parts place, sure enough, alt was toast. $117, three bolts and two electrical connections later, my beloved Camry is back on the road.

13 years is a long time for that original alternator!

road.

Its pretty good, and one would suspect the brushes have lost pressure due wear-shortening. For $117, it sounds like they replaced the regulator/brush assembly and smoothed the slip-rings and maybe chucked in a couple of bearings.

regulator/brush

I guess I should have mentioned that was the price for a new alt.

Yes, I agree that 13 years is a long time for an original alternator.

How many miles did you have on your '90 when the alt went?

Is it driven mileage or is it years sitting around that cause alternators to fail.

Did you measure the battery terminal voltage and the alternator output voltage ?

Did that local parts store in NC sell a NEW alternator for $117.00 ??

The alternator failed on my ( 58,980 miles ) '91 Camry last week. My dashboard had three indicators lighted: CHARGE, BRAKES, and LIGHTS. The battery in my LE is just about at the end of its life expectancy / Sears warranty (84 months). So, I was not certain that the problem was the alternator. Around here (on Long Island) local AutoBarn/AutoZone sell alternators for about $135.00, but they are units supplied from who knows where.

Good luck and another 13 years on that alternator ...

184,000 miles. Mostly highway/some in town miles. (commuter car)

I don't know. I drive this car Mon-Fri mostly.

Well, the AutoZone parts store I went to did. It wasn't zero, but it was close.

Rebuilt, $118.88.

The lights you had lit up (listed below) were the same ones I had on. I managed to drive about 15 miles on the battery. I thought it would have gone longer, but that's what I got.

I don't know where the one I put in my car was rebuilt.

My '89 camry had 207,000 miles on it when the original alternator quit. It was $118 for a new one, cinchy to install.

Love that Toyota reliability!
