1991 2l V6 Prominent - Uncommon Car ?

Hi,

As per previous posts I'm looking at buying a Camry Prominent V6 2l (in New Zealand). I realize that it's a Jap import, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of information on the car itself. Does anyone know if it was a short Jap factory run and maybe why they stopped (ie no-one wanted to buy the darn thing) ?

The one site I did find also listed a Lexus 250 (which I'm guessing is the upmarket version of this car ...)

It's a bit odd, because it's a V6 but with only a 2l engine (1VZ-FE I think). The insurance company wants to insure it as a 2.5 because they have no record on file of such a car...

I'm hoping not to buy an oddball which will turn out to be a dog to fix / find parts for at a later stage.

Anyone know anything?

Andrew

It is a bit of a weird one. In Australia, I have a 1990 Camry with the

2VZFE 2.5l V6. I know that Toyota made a 1VZ V6 but didnt know it went into the Camry - but they offered a lot of different donks in Japan. Having said that - the 2.5L V6 Camrys - a VZV21R in Aus were fully imported, where the 4 cyl VZ21 models were locally built. The manual for my V6 only lists the 2.5L, 2L 4 cyl and turbo diesel motors - even the 4WD drivetrain, but does not list a 2L V6.

I have had a 1989 V6 Camry Prominent for five years and I couldn?t be happier with it. It is a lovely car to drive and very well-equipped. I had a mishap once when it ran out of oil after a certain son of mine forgot to replace the dipstick, and the mechanic was amazed that the engine wasn?t terminally damaged. He put it down to the high quality materials used in the manufacture. On another occasion, I ran up the back of an old Mazda, causing $3000 damage to it, but the Camry just got a few scuff marks on its front bumper - no panel damage whatsoever because of its robust construction. The car has now done 182 000 kms and is still driving beautifully. I run it on LPG most of the time because the fuel economy isn?t brilliant, but I don?t have any other complaints. Parts have never been a problem. Many parts correspond to the 1991 Australian-delivered model, while anything a little more exotic can usually be sourced from Toyota specialist wreckers.
