1997 Camry

I recently had my engine light come on and went to Auto zone where I had their computer talk to mine and was told that it is an emissions problem. Then took the car into Dobbs Auto center and had them run a full check on the emissions. They found nothing wrong. They want me to bring the car back for a specialist to check over and pay another $ 100.00. Went to Advanced Auto parts had them check the problem was told the gas cap not on tight and they turned off the engine light. Car seems to be driving fine right now. I am woundering if there is a sensor that I might need to replace. please help.

What's the MIL code? P0440, P0441, P0442, P0446, or P0456? Most often it's caused by the gas tank cap, and Camry's computer can't seem to tell what the problem truly was and would randomly give one of those codes. Best to reset it and see if it comes back.

Also, the 97 generation has a large bad batch of charcoal canisters that can disintegrate inside and send carbon dust all over the EVAP system. Bad canister valve design. It would be costly bad news. Hope it's not this one.

Please remember the code and post it next time should it come back. The gas cap code will come back from time to time. And for this no need to spend any money. It's a design deficiency that only requires you to periodically clear the MIL code at Autozone/Advance Auto.

Had exactly the same problem as yours with a 2003 Avalon, and after checking the codes at Auto Zone, took the car to the Toyota dealer, paid $88 labor (one hour) to find out that everything was fine except the gas cap was too loose. (My better half had filled the tank last). I think your problem is the same ....just keep that damned cap on tighter and you'll be okay. Hope this helps.

Same here almost.... I replaced a lost gas cap with a non-factory one and the seal wasn't good. I got a Toyota cap and the problem went away.

The Toyota gas caps appear to leak like crazy too. ;)

As mentioned, good chance it is the fuel cap. No big deal. Remember to crank it down and if the light reappears again, repost with the code....
