1999 clutch pressure plate failure

At 99,975 miles my '99 4 cyl 5 speed Camry CE had tranny problems. The local shop determined the pressure plate on the clutch had failed and replaced the entire clutch to the tune of $800.

Anyone else seen this? The fingers were visibly spread on one portion. The clutch itself had plenty of wear left. I seem to remember the '99 did not have a 100,000 powertrain warranty.

That spreading of the release-fingers is typical of pressure-plate failure. The figers form a ring where the throw-out bearing or release-bearing, bears against it. As the fingers are depressed, the other end, flexes in the reverse direction, thus releasing pressure oof the clutch plate.

Once the diaphragm starts to distort with use, age and sometimes too much heat, the clutch begins to vibrate as it releases and takes up. Sometimes the failure is quick, happening in a couple of actions. Jason
