2000 camry starter wont stop

My camry keeps trying to start while the key is off and seems to be making the noise while the car is running... i took off the battery cable and could smell burnt plastic...i saw on another post similar to mine that the starter contacts and the plunger needed to be replaced and was wondering if its safe to drive it up to the shop tommorrow or if i should have it towed?

Theres 2 ways the starter can jam on: 1. a foreign volts signal getting thru to the starter solenoid. To test for this, unclip the single thin wire going to the body of the starter. Re-insert enough so you can quickly pull it out if the starter keeps running. If that action stops the starter, you have a fault in the LT side of the circuit. In this event, connect a test lamp to the wire in question. Operate the key a few times. If it fails to go out, you can try removing the starter relay. If that stops the lamp, replug the relay in and listen too see if it operates. They make a soft 'clonk' sound. If it is operating, then its most likely the ignition key-switch gone intermittant. This will have to be replaced.

2nd type of failure: Keep the battery +ve or -ve clamp loose enough to pull off incase the starter still keeps running after you pulled the thin wire off. The solenoid and/or its contacts are sticking. A sharp whack from a hammer should make it release. In this case, you can start the car, then remove the heavy battery-cable from the starter. This will remove battery from the solenoid contacts and the starter motor. The solenoid should then fly back with a whack from the hammer. In either case, you can get the car started,..disconnect the starter and drive it to the repair shop.

My preferred way would be to remove the starter's 2 bolts, undo the 2 wire/cable connections and remove it from the engine and get it tested/repaired at the shop.. Less chance of more damage to the starter or ring-gear.
