2000 CE Cruise control problem

I just bought a 2000 CE 2.2L w/ 98k miles on it. During the test drive I did not try the cruise control, and after the deal was done on the way home I discovered the cruise control doesn't work. Push the button on the end of the stick and the cruise light comes on but it will not engage. Anyone have any thoughts for what I might look at to fix it? TIA.

The answer to your query is in the owner's manual pages 102, 103 and 104.

Yes, thankyou...pages 102, 103, 104 also desribe operation of the cruise control in my 92 LE, which is working fine, by the way. An insert card (Form 2961 Rev A 5/97)likewise describes how the cruise control in my 2000 SE SHOULD operate, however it doesn't; the cruise indicator light burns steady and bright, it does not flash...and when I push, press, tap, squeeze or even curse the "set" or "resume" buttons, nothing happens...but the cruise light sure is a pretty shade of green.
